I have no idea why this post does not look like the way I laid it out. Michelle any direction would be helpful. At any rate, the pictures are correct.

Getting there

I went to the doctor last week. He said he will give me clearance to return to our mission when I can walk a mile without a cane and go up and down stairs. He thinks that will be late February or March.

Will we return to our original calling? We hope so, but are not sure. Things have changed a bit there lately and they may not need a second couple, only a replacement couple in October. We really don't want to wait that long. We do have to resubmit our papers, but it is a vastly shorter process. We still don't have any idea what is going on with our visas. The mission office in SLC is looking into matters for us.

It's all good. Good things have happened while we've been home and we were here to participate: Leslie's wedding, Michael's priesthood ordination, Casey and Tehvyn's blessings, to name a few. The choice of a nursing home for Mother and the responsibility of moving her there was much less of a traumatic experience for our children because we were here to facilitate the decisions.

Heavenly Father knows what He is doing. We trust Him and His decisions completely. Whatever happens, it looks like sometime in spring we will finally be able to go on our mission.

The knee surgery is over, but not the recovery. Today I got the staples out (owwch!) Tonight I get to take a shower! Hurray! The doctor is very pleased with my progress and says I am even ahead of most people at this stage. This despite the fact that the in-home physical therapy never happened. Paco is a great p.t! We are trying hard to stay positive about resuming our mission in a while. We keep reading the scriptures and conversing in Spanish. We have to trust that all will go according to Heavenly Father's plan and we are at peace with that. Still, it is hard to patient with the unknown of the future. Meantime, sitting at the computer for any length of time is difficult, so it will be a while before we can post more geneological info. Sadie did a temple baptism for Elizabeth Kranz, a great-aunt. Hopefully someone will be able to do her endowment and sealing. I can't for a while. But I feel good knowing she is baptized.

Ancestors

Here are some pictures of ancestors. The upper left is Olive Augusta Million, mother of Cora Fleda Ross who is the mother of Grandma Jones. Next is Henry W. Ross, Cora's paternal grandfather, father- in- law of Olive. He was a civil war veteran. When Grandma Jones was very little, Henry lived with Olive and George Ross, his son, Olive's husband. He was bedridden. Every morning the children would be taken into his bedroom, sat down in a row of little chairs and he would tell them stories. Unfortunately, Grandma Jones was very little and remembers none of the stories, only the experience and that she loved her grandpa. The bottom picture is of Cora Fleda Ross and George Kranz on their wedding day, 22 October, 1918. Cora and George are my grandparents. I am named after her. Sorry the pictures are not placed more correctly. I really don't know how to do that. I'm just glad I got them on here!

An excerpt from the biography of Samantha Willey Call, Paco's grandmother.
"In January, 1905, these good people consented for Aaron (her husband) to take a..mission to England...With the burden of five small children and the responsibility of getting to her husband $30.00 a month and maintaining the home...she bade farewell to her beloved husband. In the annals of history no woman has ever felt more keenly the need of implanting in the lives of her children God-like principles and riviting firmly in their young minds a testimony that God lives...Through whispered prayers, bedtime stories, high ideals, and always a vision of their hero-father, this mother taught her children to worship, making the very warp of their souls." After 27 months of service, Aaron came home. Years later she was in a car accident that left her semi-invalid for the rest of her life. "The one outstanding characteristic of (Samantha) was the constant vigilance she kept with her Heavenly Father, depending implicitly on Him on all occasions and every circumstance for the performance of every activity of every day...Her motto was 'Whatever people may think of you, do that which you believe to be right.' She also had the gift of expressing herself in writing...having written many beautiful poems.' "
Children, you have solid gospel roots.

For the past 10 days, morning and night, the great and sweet MTC physical therapists have been working with Sister Anderson's knee--trying to keep the pain bearable and the swelling down. Nothing much changed and they finally said,"We are treating the symptoms, not the cause. You need to see the doctor." The doctor's PA at home had said she thought it was a sprain. Sprains take a while to heal, but even we could see we were getting nowhere. Still, without these sweet kids insisting, Sister Anderson would probably not have gone to a doctor. She figured she was just impatient.
Yesterday, we saw a highly recommended doctor. He did an Xray. Then he came in, looked into
Sister Anderson's eyes and said, "Your knee is gone. You need a replacement. You cannot fulfill your assignment until it is fixed." She needs to go home for the needed surgery. She was devastated. He showed us the xray--it is bone on bone with cysts developing from the pressure. And, to make matters worse, the other knee is almost as bad. He explained that the medical care and expertise she needs is not available in Argentina.
The senior missionary coordinator had driven us to the appointment. We brought her in and he explained it all to her. He said we would need to get a doctor who does about 200-300 knee replacements a year; this is too important a joint to leave to anyone but an expert. Recovery time is very individual--6 weeks to 6 months. She will need physical therapy. Then he gave her a cortisone injection-which has helped the pain considerably. He is very knowledgable; we trust his diagnosis completely.
Sister Buchanan said this is not an unusual situation. Missionaries, young and senior, have to go home for various reasons all the time. There is a protocol in place. She had a few examples of people whose lives had literally been saved by discovery of medical problems while at the MTC. One of the men in our small training group is in the hospital right now having had emergency surgery for a problem that would have killed him had it happened in the Congo where he was due to go the next day.
That afternoon, we met with President Cardon, the MTC branch president. He was most encouraging and soothing. Once we get a clean bill of health, we can go back on our mission--probably to the same area. He assured us that all would be well and that this should be looked on as a blessing in disguise--what if we had been in Argentina when it happened?
So we feel at peace. We have been advised to keep the blog going as we relate how we try to stay mission-focused during the next few months. We will be officially released, but in our hearts we are still on a mission. Just taking a detour. We will put our hands in Heavenly Fathers' and trust that He is in charge. Whatever He wants us to learn from this is part of His plan and will bring us closer to being what He--and we--wants us to be.
We will be home tomorrow. Sorry, Leslie, Harmony, Tyler and Julie. Please remember us in your prayers. We love you all and are grateful for your support. We are not going to be of much use to anybody during this time. We will be focused on correction, recovery, and gettin' back out there
